Happy Thanksgiving!

Mildred’s Cafe – Restaurant Review

Mildred's CafeI heard about Mildred’s Cafe from the owner of South Jersy Subs.  It is in Cascade, just before the toll booth for the Pike’s Peak highway so it’s a bit of a drive, but for the curious or adventurous, it isn’t too far.  Owen and I decided to make the trek.

It’s a very small diner, but very easy to find.  You really can’t miss it.  First impressions were good – it appeared to be well maintained, clean, and had a decent menu – not too many items but enough of a variety, and reasonably priced.  It was pretty small, only containing about half a dozen tables, and a few seats at the counter.  Also, there was a sign proudly proclaiming that they make their own pies.  Sure enough, there was a beautiful looking pecan pie in a glass pie dish protected by a cover sitting on the counter.

I ordered the Thanksgiving sandwich, and Owen chose the Italian Sausage & Provolone.  We agreed to swap sandwich halfs, so we could each try both sandwiches, which is fast becoming a regular tactic.

Mildred's CafeThe Thanksgiving sandwich is pretty ridiculous.  I had to prop it up so that I could take a cross section image of it to show whats inside.  Turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, and cole slaw.  On my first bite, the entire slice of cranberry sauce squeezed out of the sandwich and slid onto my plate.  It was pretty slippery, and I couldn’t figure out a tactic to keep it in the sandwich as I ate it.  I ended up breaking it up and trying to have a little bit of it with each bite.

Overall, the sandwich was very good, and totally reminded me of Thanksgiving meal!  My only issue (aside from the slippery cranberry sauce) was that it seemed a bit dry – the only moisture on the sandwich came from the cole slaw, which was perched at the top.  I feel like some gravy between the turkey and the stuffing would have added a lot.  What the heck, throw some mashed potatoes in there too!

Mildred's CafeThe Sausage and Provolone sandwich was interesting.  I’ve eaten a LOT of sausage sandwiches (maybe hundreds), and I can’t recall the last time I’ve seen one made with ground sausage.  Not necessarily bad, but different.  Also different, was cold lettuce and tomato underneath the generous portion of ground sausage topped with provolone.  It added a nice hot/cold contrast to the sandwich.  Personally, I felt like the sausage was underseasoned.  I don’t want to call it bland, because I could definitely taste it, but I would have preferred something a bit spicier.

So the food is pretty good, but why should you bother to drive all the way up here?  I’ll tell you why: the pie.  A slice of pie runs $3.50 – if you want ice cream with it, its a dollar more.  Very reasonable dessert prices.  Owen and I both chose to get a slice of pecan (it was the only pie we saw, and we didn’t ask if they had other options), with a scoop of black cherry ice cream.  They warmed the pie up, and put the ice cream on top and it was amazing.

Mildred's CafeThis was the best slice of pecan pie I’ve eaten in my life.  Now I’ll admit to not being a pecan pie expert, but I think I know a good pie when I eat one.  The syrup was perfect – not too fluffy, and not too sticky or hard.  The pecans were huge, which was actually the biggest obstacle in cutting bites off, but it was something I could deal with.  It was awesome.

Overall, I really liked Mildred’s Cafe.  It’s a cute little diner thats worth the drive.  From the Colorado Springs tech center area, we were able to drive up there, eat lunch, shoot the bull with the owner, and drive back to work in about an hour and a half.  Not too bad!

Murphy’s Law Ruins The Day

Back East Bar & Grill – Restaurant Review

Back East Bar & GrillThis review is going to be very hard for me to write, because I LOVE Back East Bar & Grill.

I’ve been eating at the various incarnations of it for over 10 years, and have been to this location dozens of times.  It has always been a great experience.  As dictated by Murphy’s Law, the first time I decide to bring my camera with the intention of writing about it, I have a less than stellar experience.  Do NOT use this review as a reason to avoid Back East Bar & Grill.

Years ago, Back East Pizza & Subs was located at Murray and Airport.  It was pickup or delivery only.  My co-workers and I used to go there for lunch, then eat our food in the parking lot.  There was a bird-poop covered concrete half wall that separated the sidewalk in front of the store from the parking lot we used to sit on.  The food was so good, we didn’t care that we were sitting on a wall covered with bird crap.  After they shut down, I spent a couple of years lamenting the fact that they were gone before I discovered that they had moved up north and changed their name.

The new location is awesome – they have tables and everything!

The restaurant is in a nice area, nestled behind the Salsa Brava on Briargate.  They have many TVs located well enough that no matter where you sit, you will be able to watch one.  There is a sizable bar dividing the dining room into two halves, and baseball caps, football helmets, jerseys, and other sports paraphenlia hang from the ceiling and adorn the walls.

When my friend Mark and I walked in, we stood by the entrance with nobody to greet us.  After a few moments, we asked the bartender if we were supposed to seat ourselves (not normal.)  He said no, and ran off to find someone.  A minute later a hostess arrived and led us to a table.

After looking over the extensive menu, I decided on the parmasan chicken sandwich, with “spicy tater munchers.”

Then we waited – for what seemed like a very long time.  Way longer than usual.  It seemed to take forever to get our food.  The restaurant was quite busy, but it looked like only two waitresses were on duty.  Actually just one.  The second one was a trainee who was either following the primary one around observing, or tentatively venturing off on her own to do an occasional drink refill.  They were both very friendly, and did an adequate job keeping our drinks topped off, but the food took abnormally long to arrive.

We finally received our lunch, and the first thing I noticed was that my parmasan chicken sandwich seemed awfully light on the mozzerella.  When I bit into it, the chicken seemed a bit dry and perhaps a tad rubbery – as if it had been sitting in a warming drawer for too long.  I have to say, it was a fairly disappointing sandwich.

The spicy tater munchers were great!  They are basically differently shaped tater tots, with a little bit of cheese (I think) and something spicy (maybe jalapenos) mixed in.  I love them.  They were hot in the middle, and crispy on the outside.  I only wish I could say the same about my chicken!

For today, I have to give my visit a mediocre rating of 2 stars.  It pains me greatly to do it, and I’m hoping to re-visit soon to bring that rating up!  I always have a wonderful time here, but I’m afraid I happened to catch them on an off shift.

Pretentious But Friendly

This restaurant is no longer in business.
Piazza Wine Bar And Pizzeria – Restaurant Review

Piazza opened up about 7 weeks ago where Slayton’s BBQ used to be. My friend Mark and I finally got around to trying it. I have to admit, my first impression wasn’t great. It seemed like they were trying too hard to be elegant, but it came off as pretentious. It seemed like they were trying to be a more upscale version of Il Vicino, but not succeeding. Some of these initial thoughts turned out to be true, but not all of them.

First – Piazza IS a ripoff of Il Vicino. It is a wine bar / gourmet pizza place. It differentiates itself by offering full service dining. The pizzas are slightly pricier than Il Vicino and, unfortunately, more limited. There are only a handful of pizzas on the menu, and none of them seemed particularly adventurous. They do have a lot of spaghetti options, and a few well priced sandwiches, however.

Our waitress defied the atmosphere by being very smiley and friendly – not stuffy at all. Mark ordered a Rustica pizza, and I went with a chicken parmesan sandwich and a bowl of minestrone soup. It took a while to get our order, but just as I was getting antsy, it arrived.

Mark’s pizza was huge – it was literally hanging off the sides of the plate. When the waitress put it down, I exclaimed, “Wow, that’s big!”. Our waitress smiled and said, “It’s my favorite. Don’t tell anybody, but I can eat a whole one by myself!” I laughed, and told her that I was going to tell everybody. I’ll withhold her name, since I’m a gentleman. Or something.

The minestrone soup was average. There were lots of ingredients, but nothing stood out – it all kind of melded into the same flavor. Next time I’ll try the salad.

My chicken Parmesan sandwich was awesome. The bread was delicious, and had been grilled a bit on the inside. The chicken breast was tender and flavorful and slightly breaded and topped with tons of gooey mozzarella cheese and tomato sauce. I loved it. My iced tea was well priced, at only $1.25, which is very unusual – usually drinks are a huge profit margin for restaurants.Chicken Parmesan Sandwich

Overall, I thought it was a good experience. Il Vicino has them beat when it comes to options and quality of pizza, but if you are in the area, you won’t be disappointed by Piazza. The sandwich was fantastic, and the service was good. We paid about twelve dollars each for lunch, which is acceptable.

Good Food… For A Price

All American Sports Cafe – Restaurant Review

Cheesesteak SandwichI was browsing around online looking for good eats in Colorado Springs when I ran across a thread on the Colorado Springs city-data forums where people were offering their suggestions for the best meatball or pastrami sandwich in town. Meatball and pastrami are two of my favorite food groups, so I was immediately intrigued. In that thread, “Mike from back east” swore that the Philly cheesesteak at All American Sports Cafe was the best one he’s ever had. With that kind of recommendation in addition to my love of cheesesteak, I just had to see for myself.

My first reaction upon seeing the menu was surprise. It was expensive! The appetizers alone go from 7 to 14 dollars! The hot sandwiches we came for run about 10 bucks each. Ouch!

I was in a bit of a dilemma. Mark and I have been on a quest to find the best Pastrami sandwich in town (so far, Broadway Deli holds that crown), but I came here for the cheesesteak. Ultimately we decided that I would order the cheesesteak, Mark would order the pastrami, and we’d each get half of each sandwich.

Of immediate note to me was the fact that it was not served on an Amoroso roll – I’m ok with that, but it screams “not authentic!” Mark and I cut our sandwiches and shared ‘em. Cheesesteak and Pastrami Sandwiches

The pastrami looked great. Not a spec of fat or gristle – the only problem was that there wasn’t enough pastrami on my half!

The cheesesteak was good, but not great. The peppers and meat were tasty. I’m pretty sure it had American cheese on it, instead of provolone. I’m not sure what Mike’s experience entails, but this sandwich was nowhere close to the best cheesesteak I’ve ever had – that honor is held by John’s Rost Pork in south Philadelphia. There are even better cheesesteaks to be found in town (Taste of Phily or Trivelli’s). Like I said – it was a good sandwich, but I’ve had better.

The pastrami with swiss was very good. I thought the quality of the meat was outstanding, but it was too thin. Not sliced to thin – layered too thin. There wasn’t enough pastrami, so the bread overpowered it. Maybe I just picked the wrong half, and Mark had tons of meat on his side, but for me, the biggest problem was the meat to bread ratio.

The friest that came with the meal were awesome. Fresh and crispy and all around delicious. I’ve probably had better fries before, but I don’t remember it. No complaints there.

The service was average, the prices were steep, and the food was good. In all, not a bad place to go for lunch. Judging by the food alone, I would definately come back here for lunch, but the prices will always make me think twice about it.

Friendly And Delicious

Culpepper’s Cajun Kitchen – Restaurant Review

Culpepper's Cajun KitchenCulpepper’s new location feels like fast food, but it is NOT. This is high quality cuisine served in a fast-food-like environment. You order at the counter, and when they call you, you come and get it, but thats where the similarity ends. I’d suggest getting to Culpepper’s Cajun Kitchen on the early side of lunch, because being situated right outside of Fort Carson, it gets awful busy, and it can take a while to get fed.

I arrived around 11:20, and was happy to see the owner, Martin, working the counter. I met Martin when Culpepper’s was at its old location on the north side of town. He’s a nice guy, and took the time to chat with my family and I the first time we ate there. The restaraunt is named after his wife’s family – her maiden name is Culpepper.

I ordered a shrimp po’ boy, and I wasn’t disappointed.

The batter around the shrimp was spicy enough to be flavorful and interesting without taking away from the shrimp itself. The sandwich was absolutely delicious. It came with some Zapp’s potato chips (not sure, but maybe the Cajun Crawtator flavor) which were also spectacular. Crunchy and delicious. I couldn’t have been happier with my meal. But we weren’t done!

Culpepper's Cajun KitchenI went back to the counter, and got an order of beignets. There were 3 of us (Sean and Mark were with me), and we got 3 beignets in an order. Perfect.

Wow! Look at all that powdered sugar. What can I say? Fried dough and sugar tastes good, and that’s exactly how it tasted.

You’ll pay 9 bucks minimum for a lunch entree here – if you want a drink or dessert expect to pay on the order of 12-15 dollars for lunch, not cheap, but not outrageous.

I’ll be back.

Wow!

Jake & Telly’s – Restaurant Review

Jake & Telly'sAfter eating at Jake & Telly’s, I’m kicking myself for not having come here sooner. I’ve known of the place for years, and everything I had ever heard about it was positive, but for some reason I just never quite made made it over. Big mistake. My friend Mark (previously known as Z) suggested it for lunch today, and I agreed. Good idea.

Jake & Telly’s is easy to find, right on Colorado Ave between 26th and 27th streets. Once you go in the door, you have to climb the stairs to enter the restaurant. There is probably a handicapped accessible way, but I didn’t notice it on the way in. The hostess asked us if we would like to sit on the patio, and since it was such a nice day, we agreed, and were seated right away.

We decided to share an order of “Keftethes”, which is an appetizer of seasoned meatballs with tomato based lamb sauce and cheese, serviced with grilled pita bread. I also ordered a sandwich called “The Jake”.

Jake & Telly'sThe Keftethes were amazing. Not being schooled in the culinary arts, I can’t even begin to describe the flavor, but these were probably the best meatballs I’ve ever eaten. The sauce was delicious and savory, the meatballs had just the right amount of moisture in them, and the pita bread was awesome – and especially useful for sopping up the sauce! The only downer is that one of them was missing a big chunk out of it, and had been cleverly propped up against one of the other ones so that it wasn’t super noticeable until it was its turn to be eaten. Fortunately for me, that one was Mark’s. HA HA!

The Jake was terrific. It is basically a sandwich with grilled chicken and prosciutto, with tomatoes and provolone. The ingredients are simple, but the flavor was complex. Instead of fries, I had ordered a Greek vegetable and beef soup, which was also awesome.

The prices weren’t exorbitant, the service was good, the food was excellent. I’ve got no complaints, and I’ll definitely be back.

I Love Tiramisu

Savelli’s – Restaurant Review

Grinder SandwichI’ve been coming to Savelli’s for a long time, and I’m always happy. It’s a little ways out of the way, but its worth the drive. The fare is pretty simple, but it tastes great, the service is friendly and fast, and it is acceptably priced.

I met some friends at Savelli’s today, and decided to try the Grinder. It’s basically ground up Italian sausage with sauce, some onions and peppers covered with provolone, on a roll.

It tasted great, and I wolfed it down pretty fast. The chips are nothing special, but they were fine.

After my meal, I decided to spoil myself and go for the Tiramisu.Tiramisu

Omg awesome. What else can I say? It was terrific. My only extremely minor complaint is that the cakey part was a bit heavy, and I like it to be very light. I managed to get over it, and enjoyed every bite.

Eveything’s French!

La Baguette – Restaurant Review

La BaguetteLa Baguette is close to where I work, but often overlooked, since it is slightly off the beaten path, being just south of Garden of the Gods, on Chestnut. Out of sight, out of mind… unfortunately.

The first thing you notice when you walk in the door is the smells. Delicious. Fresh baked pastries, food, etc mingle to wake up your appetite. The restaurant itself is very small, maybe 8 tables. Walk up to the counter and order.

I decided to go for the French Dip and a bowl of French Onion Soup. I took my number and sat down with my buds. It didn’t take long for my food to arrive, and it looked awesome!

The sandwich tasted every bit as good as it looked (maybe better!) The meat was very tender, and was seasoned perfectly, with very little fat. The cheese was plentiful and delicious. The Au Jus sauce seemed different than normal – it had chunks of meat in it, which I’ve never seen before. It was great too.

La Baguette is well known in town for its soup. If the only thing you ever come here for is the French Onion soup, you won’t be disappointed. The onions melt in your mouth, and the bread and cheese are perfect. If you come here, order the soup!

No matter how you feel about the French, you should try this place out.

Smallest Bag Of Chips… Ever

Panino’s Restaurant – Restaurant Review

Panino's RestaurantI have to admit to being pleasantly surprised. Z wanted Panino’s, but I was reluctant, because they have a long history of being extremely slow. We went anyways, and it turned out to be very good, and very fast!

I usually get a calzone, which may be a contributing factor to why they are always slow for me. This time, I went with one of their signature Panino Sandwiches. I got the “Cowboy”, with a “tiny bag of chips”, which was one of my options for sides.

I can’t fault their honesty, because this bag of chips was tiny. It was .5 ounces of chips, which roughly translates to a dozen or so chips.

The sandwich was awesome. Ham, cheese, along with other stuff wrapped in panini bread and grilled, I assume on some sort of panini press (the precurser to the George Foreman grill).

Delicious and fast – my best Panino’s experience to date.
