Keep Your Eye On The Menu!

Savelli’s – Restaurant Review

I’ve written about Savelli’s a couple of times before, but its been a few years, so I wanted to revisit it.

The biggest change that I noticed is the “Please Wait To Be Seated” sign near the front. You used to order and pay at the counter, then your food was brought to you. Now, they offer full table service, which is a nice touch.

My friend Owen and I were greeted immediately by a very cheerful lady and were seated in a booth. We ordered drinks and cheese bread. This cheese bread always has been, and is still amazing.

You could seriously just order the cheese bread and eat that for lunch. It’s basically pizza dough with lots of cheese, baked and topped with parmesan and some Italian seasonings (oregano, basil, etc). Its big enough to share with 3 people, easily.

I ordered the Buffalo Chicken sandwich, and Owen went with the Italian Grinder. Both hot sandwiches were spectacular. The chicken sandwich had lots of cheese, the buffalo sauce wasn’t hot at all, but had great flavor. My only issue was that it had a bit too much lettuce, but that was easily remedied by removing some. The focaccia bread was terrific – not too dense, like many I’ve had.

Owen loved his grinder, and raved about the bread it was on. We asked the waitress if they made their own bread, and were told no – but they got it fresh every day from a local bakery. We didn’t ask which one, but we should have. There’s always next time.

Sitting next to such great sandwiches, the straight-out-of-the-bag potato chips were a huge disappointment, and actually took away from the overall experience. You have a choice of pasta salad, or chips. That’s it. I’m not a fan of pasta salad, and I really wish I could get something else. Maybe some fresh vegetables with ranch or something! Neither one of us ate all our chips.

When we got our bill is where I received the biggest surprise. There was a mystery charge of 67 cents. Our waitress told us that the price for the Buffalo Chicken went up, but they haven’t updated the menu yet. That would have been great to know when I ordered it! I understand that prices sometimes increase, but seriously – print the new menu, THEN raise the price. To just spring it on a customer after they’ve ordered and eaten is a straight up bait and switch. Not cool.

The place is old, and could use some updating – the tables are a bit wobbly, and the booth seats sink a bit when you sit in them. There’s also some weird plumbing decisions in the bathroom, like a sink so close to the urinal that both couldn’t possibly be used at the same time. But the restaurant was immaculately clean, and we had great service overall. The cheese bread and sandwiches were delicious. I was let down by the boring chips, and quite unhappy with the inaccurate prices on the menu.

Not What I Remember

Roman Villa Pizza – Restaurant Review

Roman Villa PizzaI’ve been trying to visit this place for a few weeks, but it is deceptively difficult. Its closed for lunch. It’s also closed on Mondays. Finally, I brought my family here on a Thursday night, right after work. We tried to beat the dinner rush, but the place was packed. We were lucky, and were sat at one of the last tables. I had come here once before, a long time ago (approximately 18 years), and I remembered it being a nice quite, good dining experience. Either my memory is faulty (hey, I’m getting old), or it has changed significantly.

There were no kids options on the menu, so I asked the waitress if they had anything for children. They do. You can get a kids sized cheese pizza for cheap ($3.00), and add toppings for only fifty cents. They will also do a child portion of pasta. There is nothing written down about this, you have to ask for it.

The service was bad. It several minutes for us to be acknowledged after we were sat, and longer for drinks, and longer still for our order to be taken. Every time our waitress came to our table, she apologized profusely about the level of service, but that of course does nothing to change it.

My son went for the kids pepperoni pizza, my daughter and I decided to share a 12″ pizza, and my wife ordered the Roman Villa Chicken, which sounded great on the menu.

From the time we arrived, to the time we received our food, nearly an hour had elapsed.

The pizza looked good, and honestly I didn’t have a lot of complaints about its quality. It was good pizza. It took us a few seconds to find our pepperonis (they were under the cheese), but they were there in abundance. I had mushrooms on my half, and they were plentiful and fresh. The pizza was good, but honestly, I didn’t think it was better than Il Vicino. It was a pretty big step up from Dominos or Pizza Hut though, and seemed like a good value ($12.00).

Roman Villa PizzaMy wife’s Roman Villa Chicken was another matter. It sounded great – cheese, artichoke hearts, and a chicken breast baked in some kind of yummy sauce. In practice, the chicken was a bit dry, and tasted a touch like fish. She was not impressed, and by the couple bites I stole from her, neither was I. The cheese and artichokes were good at least.

While we were eating, my son noticed a spider hanging from the ceiling by a strand of web, about 8 inches from his head. He pointed it out, and my wife and daughter freaked out. My son and I thought it was kind of funny, but the arachnophobes in my family sure didn’t. We ended up crushing it in a napkin and setting it aside.

Overall, I can’t give this experience more than an average rating. Stay away from the house dishes, and stick with the pizza. If you are going to take your family out to Pizza Hut anyway, this is a good alternative. It is not a small romantic Italian eatery that you would want to take a date to. It is crowded, slow, and loud and they really only do pizza well. And there are spiders.

I’m a believer in second chances, but when I told my family that we should come back some other time and see if it was a fluke, I was met with a resounding “NO!”

The Fuzz Hangs Out At Savelli’s

Savelli’s – Restaurant Review

Steak SandwichAs you come out of Old Colorado City and into Manitou Springs, one of the first places you run into is Savelli’s. The building looks pretty cool – it has windows painted to make it look like there is a second story, and my kids love it. It’s also right across the street from the nice big park in Manitou.

Anyways, a fairly large group of my friends (seven) decided to meet here for lunch. We arrived, and ordered at the counter, then took our seats. One thing about Savelli’s is that it is a favorite of the local police force. I don’t recall ever coming here and not seeing police officers or firemen eating lunch, and today was no exception. If you are on the lam, this is not the place to hide! Lucky for me, I have no such problem, because it would suck to not be able to go here.

I ordered some cheese bread and a steak sub.

The cheesebread is pretty huge for an appetizer – it basically looks like a cheese pizza without the pizza sauce. Luckily, it comes with a side of sauce to dip the slices in. It’s really really good, and I order it every time.Cheesebread

The sandwich is awesome too. Despite being called a steak sandwich, It isn’t quite a cheesesteak. It’s chopped ribeye, served on a French roll with cheese, tomatoes, onions, and peppers (I eighty-sixed the peppers). There is a small amount of some kind of sauce on there as well.

This is the kind of place I really enjoy. It’s a small local joint with good food, reasonable prices and a nice atmosphere.

Fast – Its Not For Everyone

Panino’s Restaurant – Restaurant Review

Panino's RestaurantI met some friends for lunch at Panino’s in downtown Colorado Springs. The experience can be summed up in one word: slow. Slow to take the order. Slow to serve the food. Slow to bring the check. If your in a hurry, this is not the place to go.

I ordered what I called a “pig calzone”. Basically, it was the build your own calzone, with all of the pig products on the menu (sausage, bacon, ham). It is served with a small bowl of marinara sauce for dipping/pouring. I was happy with the quality of the food, but it didn’t knock my socks off or anything.

I forgot my digital camera, so I had to beg one of my friends to take some pictures on his camera phone – I’ll get em posted as soon as I can! (UPDATE: Posted!)

There’s really not much else to say, so I guess I’ll cut this one short.
