Keep Your Eye On The Menu!

Savelli’s – Restaurant Review

I’ve written about Savelli’s a couple of times before, but its been a few years, so I wanted to revisit it.

The biggest change that I noticed is the “Please Wait To Be Seated” sign near the front. You used to order and pay at the counter, then your food was brought to you. Now, they offer full table service, which is a nice touch.

My friend Owen and I were greeted immediately by a very cheerful lady and were seated in a booth. We ordered drinks and cheese bread. This cheese bread always has been, and is still amazing.

You could seriously just order the cheese bread and eat that for lunch. It’s basically pizza dough with lots of cheese, baked and topped with parmesan and some Italian seasonings (oregano, basil, etc). Its big enough to share with 3 people, easily.

I ordered the Buffalo Chicken sandwich, and Owen went with the Italian Grinder. Both hot sandwiches were spectacular. The chicken sandwich had lots of cheese, the buffalo sauce wasn’t hot at all, but had great flavor. My only issue was that it had a bit too much lettuce, but that was easily remedied by removing some. The focaccia bread was terrific – not too dense, like many I’ve had.

Owen loved his grinder, and raved about the bread it was on. We asked the waitress if they made their own bread, and were told no – but they got it fresh every day from a local bakery. We didn’t ask which one, but we should have. There’s always next time.

Sitting next to such great sandwiches, the straight-out-of-the-bag potato chips were a huge disappointment, and actually took away from the overall experience. You have a choice of pasta salad, or chips. That’s it. I’m not a fan of pasta salad, and I really wish I could get something else. Maybe some fresh vegetables with ranch or something! Neither one of us ate all our chips.

When we got our bill is where I received the biggest surprise. There was a mystery charge of 67 cents. Our waitress told us that the price for the Buffalo Chicken went up, but they haven’t updated the menu yet. That would have been great to know when I ordered it! I understand that prices sometimes increase, but seriously – print the new menu, THEN raise the price. To just spring it on a customer after they’ve ordered and eaten is a straight up bait and switch. Not cool.

The place is old, and could use some updating – the tables are a bit wobbly, and the booth seats sink a bit when you sit in them. There’s also some weird plumbing decisions in the bathroom, like a sink so close to the urinal that both couldn’t possibly be used at the same time. But the restaurant was immaculately clean, and we had great service overall. The cheese bread and sandwiches were delicious. I was let down by the boring chips, and quite unhappy with the inaccurate prices on the menu.

Don’t Judge A Book By It’s Cover!

Conway’s Red Top – Restaurant Review

Sitting in front of a barely maintained, nondescript strip mall, next door to a marijuana dispensary and a motorcycle shop, it doesn’t look like much, but Conway’s Red Top has been a consistent favorite of locals for over 40 years. Overlook the torn carpet and exposed air ducts, and enjoy a Colorado Springs tradition.

We were greeted and seated almost immediately, and the service was fast and friendly in its entirety. At more than $10 each, their burgers aren’t exactly cheap, but they are HUGE. Also, they are more than willing to split a whole burger across two plates, and only charge you for a single burger, despite the fact that they sell “half” burgers individually for about $8. Some places won’t let you do that (I’m lookin’ at you, Colorado Mountain Brewery), and I really appreciate the consumer friendliness.

Mark, Owen, and I got a half Mike’s Mushroom Top each, with curly fries. The burgers are very large, but pressed pretty thin and cooked all the way through. I’m usually not a fan of pressed fully cooked beef, but in this case, it works; probably because of how much cheese, bacon, and mushrooms get piled on top. Speaking of cheese, holy cow! They must have melted at least 6 slices on it – it was just oozing off. Delicious!

To be honest, I thought the curly fries were a bit bland, but a little salt fixed that right up. They used to sell pie and other sweets here, but we weren’t even asked if we wanted dessert after our lunch. We were full enough that we would have probably said no, but it would have been nice to be asked.

Overall, a good lunch. I’ve been going to Red Top for years, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

Hot Pockets!

Edelweiss Restaurant – Restaurant Review

EdelweissWe don’t have a lot of German restaurants in The Springs, but the ones we do have are pretty good. Eidelweiss is no exception. It was a beautiful day, so we sat outside on the patio.

I knew exactly what I wanted – the same thing I ordered the last time I was here. It was so delicious, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on another one. It’s called baked brie en croute, and is much like a glorified hot pocket.

Basically, it is ham and brie inside a flaky pastry shell. It is served with cranberry sauce and a bowl of fresh fruit. I added a dab of cranberry sauce to each bite of the entree, and it was fantastic – they just go so well together, its hard to describe.

The only marginal upset I had today was that our service was just a touch slow – its almost like when your out on the patio, they forget about you – out of sight out of mind, I guess.

I’ve never had a bad experience at Edelweiss, and I love their food. Lunch prices are extremely reasonable, and the food is stellar. It’s a cozy little place just off of South Tejon, and you very likely won’t be disappointed.
